Call for Papers – Conference at the University of Parma on AI, Biometric and Health Data

The DCU Law and Tech Research Cluster is delighted to share a call for papers for the international conference: “Artificial Intelligence and Sensitive Data: Challenges, Regulatory Solutions and the Protection of Fundamental Rights” organised by our colleagues from at the Università degli Studi di Parma.

The conference is part of the research project “AI-Biometric Systems and Fundamental Rights Protection: Legal Challenges and Regulatory Solutions in a Comparative Perspective,” and aims to bring together scholars working on the legal, regulatory, and rights-based challenges raised by AI systems relying on biometric and health-related data.

📌 Topics of Interest

The organisers welcome contributions that engage with the legal and policy implications of AI and sensitive data through interdisciplinary and/or comparative lenses. Suggested (non-exhaustive) topics include:

  • Facial recognition, emotion recognition, and surveillance
  • AI and biometric data in public security, border control, or smart cities
  • AI-based health technologies and digital welfare tools
  • Predictive policing and social scoring
  • Fundamental rights challenges (e.g. privacy, health, non-discrimination, labour rights)
  • Interactions between the AI Act and GDPR, including Fundamental Rights Impact Assessments
  • National and supranational case law, data protection authorities’ decisions, and regulatory innovation
